Coral Reef:
The Underwater Cities
Challenges
With so much research and data available on coral reef ecosystems, the biggest challenge was distilling all of that information into a clear and engaging visual narrative. The goal was to avoid overwhelming viewers while ensuring they could easily read the data posters and understand the urgent message about coral reef decline.
Process
I began by collecting and studying data on coral reef ecosystems. The more I researched, the more I realized the severity of their rapid disappearance, which shaped the direction of the project. From there, I sketched initial concepts to explore how to communicate the data in a visually compelling yet understandable way. I developed three data models, refining the information hierarchy, layout, and design. This process allowed me to balance clarity with engagement and prepare the data for its final presentation.
Solution
The outcome was two finalized data posters that highlight the critical threats to coral reefs and their economic value. One poster focuses on the rapid disappearance of coral reefs, while the other outlines their economic importance and the dependencies they support. By simplifying complex data and using clear visual storytelling, the posters effectively communicate the urgency of the issue without overwhelming the viewer.
