On a Bay that Belonged to None of Us
Anthology
Print
A collaborative book collectively written and designed by the University of Houston's Graphic Design class. This book brings together 21 short creative narratives from 21 designers of diverse backgrounds and cultures, each offering unique perspectives and experiences from their senior trip to Rockport, Texas. Every page features high-contrast black-and-white images that symbolize each designer's personal experience in Rockport.
Challenges
A key challenge was designing a unified and consistent book while presenting 21 distinct stories. This required close collaboration and communication within the 21 designers to ensure visual and structural consistency, while also giving each story the freedom to reflect the unique personality, style, and experience of its designer.
Process
Using the photos from the trip, each person designed dedicated pages to visually tell their own story. I merged and cropped multiple images to create a collage-like composition with a tactile, layered feel. To enhance the sensory experience, I incorporated handmade textures alongside photographs of natural surfaces, such as shoreline sand and seashells.
Solution
We established balance by implementing high-contrast black-and-white photography, a shared typographic system, and a consistent grid layout across all pages.
