K is for Korean Alphabet

Grid Studies
Print

A series of grid studies that explores three types of grid systems: manuscript, modular, and deconstructive. The dynamic use of Korean letters plays along with grid structures, conveying a sense of consistency and structure, showing alignment and balance with their distinctive combinations of lines and circles. The Korean alphabet presents simplicity in their form and shapes that simulates the structure in each studies of grids.

Challenges

To explore how different grid systems—manuscript, modular, and deconstructive—can be used to create structured yet visually engaging compositions using the unique forms of the Korean alphabet.

Process

I conducted a series of grid studies, each based on a different grid system. Korean letters served as the primary visual elements, selected for their geometric simplicity and balance of lines and circles. By experimenting with alignment, spacing, and composition within each grid, the studies explored how structure can create visual rhythm and consistency while still allowing for expressive design.

Solution

The final studies demonstrate how manuscript, modular, and deconstructive grids can support both order and creativity. The Korean characters not only complement the underlying grid structures but also emphasize the visual harmony and contrast within each system. The result is a set of compositions that explore the connection between type and space.
